Spinal Manipulation
Spinal Manipulation is a very old therapeutic intervention Hippocrates, the “father of medicine” used manipulative techniques as did the ancient Egyptians. Manipulation can be performed on spinal articulations and also peripheral joints with the aim being to improve the movement of a joint immediately by releasing pressure from within the joint or breaking restrictive adhesions. Typically these techniques are practiced by Chiropractors, osteopaths and specially trained Physiotherapists such as ourselves. They are usually called high-velocity amplitude thrust techniques and involve a quick, short movement usually followed by a pop as pressure is released from a joint.
The effects of spinal manipulation have been shown to include:
- Temporary relief of musculoskeletal pain (Ronald et al)
- Shortened time to recover from acute back pain (Flynn, 2002)
- A temporary increase in range of motion (Nilsson et al, 1996)
- Positive Physiological effects on the central nervous system (Coronado, 2013)
Although beneficial, this can sometimes result in only short-term relief as the surrounding muscles and tendons are left untreated. Therefore, manipulations are most effective when performed alongside soft tissue techniques and followed with therapeutic exercise to maintain the benefits long term. Our treatment at the Physiotherapy Rooms LTD focuses on a blend of approaches specific to your needs at the time and typically involves not just one technique but several throughout a treatment plan.
